Yoga Mala: The Original Teachings of Ashtanga Yoga Master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Overview
Yoga Mala—a “garland of yoga”—is Jois’s authoritative guide to Ashtanga. In it, he outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline, explains important terms and concepts, and guides the reader through Ashtanga’s Sun Salutations and the subsequent primary sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. It is a foundational work on yoga by a true master.
To coincide with publication of Guruji: A Portrait of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Through the Eyes of His Students by Guy Donahaye and Eddie Stern, this new edition of Yoga Mala includes a foreword by Jois’s grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, currently co-director of the famous school Jois founded in Mysore, the Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga
The meaning of Ashtanga is eight (Ashta) and limb (anga), therefore Ashtanga yoga is a form of yoga's eight limb practice. Each practice supports the other. Synchronizing is the key; each limb or practice has to be synchronized with the other. Learning the practice of abstinence, close observations, good posture, controlled breathing, concentration, complete absorption in meditation, withdrawing from distractions, and bringing everything into harmony are the eight limbs to accomplish in Ashtanga yoga. Many yoga schools embrace Ashtanga yoga as a complete practice for spiritual and external cleansing.
The goal in yoga is to accomplish personal health and well being, thereby living a happier life. Ashtanga helps accomplish this. Most yoga practitioners already use the third limb (posture) but are so focused on posture they do not think about the other seven limbs. The fourth practice - controlled breathing, is perfect for relaxation. Seeing a spot and focusing on it can teach you focus. Learning to relax your mind and body can aid in meditation and help you gain control of the senses. This in turn will give us greater awareness of our inner most being. Commonly using Ashtanga and coupling it with devotion will raise our consciousness to new levels. Ashtanga is perfect to cleanse us physically, psychologically and spiritually.
Ashtanga Yoga
In exploring the components of Ashtanga and its eight limbs there is four external components and four internal components. Breathing is to yoga as a heart is to man. Movement and controlled breathing in the exact order creates a heat that purifies internal organs and muscles. The body expels toxins and releases hormones. Massaging the sweat back into the skin can give the body much needed minerals. Circulation is improved resulting in a stronger body.

Only Way Out Is In: A Modern Day Yogi's Commentary on the Synergy of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Tantra Overview
How can we get on the road to true happiness, peace, and equanimity? Is it possible to find it in this lifetime? The Only Way Out Is In, addresses these questions and gives an answer to man's relentless lifelong quest of looking outside oneself and chasing this inevitable illusion when the answer is simply to look within! This book offers guidance for each individual to look inside and live in the here and now, using the ancient practices of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Tantra in daily living. It affirms that the way "In," can be found by the practices of self-study offered by these three sciences. Utilizing the synergy of the three is one of the most powerful practices for the journey within. Each one has it's own unique qualities of clearing, building, and cultivating the needed energy to ascend. Ashtanga Yoga does this through the practices of yogic postures, breathing, and awareness techniques while using the body as a vehicle for transformation. Ayurveda assists each individual by creating a blueprint for which to live a healthy, vibrant life, as well as to understand your own unique place in the natural order of the Universe. Tantra guides readers further within by connecting people with their own inherent wisdom through the concept of loving yourself first and foremost. Out of cultivating this love of yourself, people naturally share the abundance with everyone and everything. Carlisi's book demystifies these esoteric practices in a user-friendly way. He lures the reader "In" by describing vividly and vulnerably his own trials and tribulations along the Yogic path. He does this by clearly creating a usable "map" for life, that he developed over 30 years of self research as a practitioner of these 3 sciences.Customer Reviews

The Niyamas are those thoughts and activities, which promote a state of mind, which is conducive to Yoga. The Niyamas consist of Saucha(cleanliness), Santosha(contentment), Tapas(heat), Svadhyaya(study of the supreme), Ishvara Pranidhana(surrender to the supreme).
The Asana institution is the gateway into the steps of Ashtanga Yoga. Asana practice, which includes Pranayama, returns the body to a radiant state of condition and purifies the subtle power body. This prepares the mind for meditation and encourages dis-functional behavior patterns to be abandoned.
The Ashtanga Vinyasa System, refers to a method of Yoga practice, which was described in the Yoga Kurunta, by Vamana Rishi. It includes hundreds of postures, which are sequentially connected by Vinyasa. Vinyasa is the breath-initiated movement in the middle of postures.
Three actions are emphasized in the Ashtanga Vinyasa method. Bandhas(locks or power seals), Dristi(the gaze or looking place in each posture) and Oujaii Pranayama(a sound induced breath applied to both the inhaling and exhaling breath).
When these system are applied continuously, the Asana institution reveals the culmination of Ashtanga Yoga.
